It is 10 years since the events in America that changed the world. I can still clearly remember the evening I was working as the Executive Officer for ICTEV (formerly CEGV) and that evening I had completed some work on Databases for the association. I was about to go to bed and decided to check the TV just in case I was missing something - I didn't miss anything. I flicked across the channels and on had a breaking news story of a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Centre buildings and there was discussion around what type of plane it could have been, then without any warning a second plane quickly loomed into the camera view and with then hit the second building; the rest we all know about.
Given it is ten years since this event it happened to be pure coincidence that I have been reading (well listening too) the book "I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59" and today I have come across the part of the book that looks at Google's reaction t 9/11. It is interesting to hear some of the decisions and reactions to how the news was handled through Google. This chapter in the book made me think about the way technology has changed over the last 10 years and how our behavior has changed in times of crisis and need.
For me the idea of capturing our thoughts and reflections of these events through technology is an amazing capability where we can capture first hand our own personal story and events that have an impact on our lives. To me this is a fundamental skill that we should all learn and use and with it the responsibility of being custodians of these stories; for these stories help to teach, inspire and lead.
What stories would you want to capture, what stories have you missed out on capturing.
In remembrance.
